A leader in dual language education, The French Academy of Bilingual Culture serves students from Nursery through 4th grade, adding a grade each year with plans to go to 8th grade. The Academy also hosts after school activities in French, enrichment classes, summer programs for children and language classes for adults. There are locations in New Milford and Morris Plains, New Jersey.

We follow the structure of the French Education Ministry, while adhering to the American guidelines established by the NJ Core Curriculum Standards. After attending our school, students are prepared to enter French or American schools.

Our Approach in all grades

In the early years, we focus on establishing a strong foundation in French. Then we gradually increase the amount of time taught in English.

At 3 years old, children will receive 3 hours of English per week. In Kindergarten it will be 5 hours, on second grade, 8.5 hours. By fourth grade the children will receive an equal amount of French and English.

At all grades, we consider the whole child, carefully monitoring emotional, social and academic development. We believe all children have a potential for excellence and we do everything we can to develop their potential.

Progress Reports

Tracking progress carefully and consistently is an important tool for development. In all grades, parents receive Progress Reports three times a year. The goal of this report is to evaluate progress of core competencies across the full curriculum. Our teachers also meet with parents regularly. Formal parent-teacher conferences are organized twice a year, in early December and March. However, our teachers always make themselves available for any parents with questions or concerns.

Standardized Tests

The second graders take the NJ Pass and a national evaluation from the French Education Ministry.

The Responsive Classroom Approach

Students learn best when their classrooms are places where they feel safe, challenged, and happy. In other words, places where they feel free to learn.

We use the Responsive Classroom approach in all classes. This teaching approach emphasizes a strong and safe school community.

Student Services for All Grades

  • Language support:  If a child needs supplemental reinforcement in French or English, we have dedicated language experts. Children can receive this extra attention during the school day with private or small group attention or right after school, from 3pm to 3:30pm.
  • Academic support: If a child needs extra help in core skills, like reading or math, a team of experts is also available within the school day to supplement the basic skills.
  • French Homework Help: Our French teachers offer assistance on French homework from 3 pm to 4pm. There is an extra cost for this service.
  • Learning Consultant: Valuable experts work with us to evaluate or advise on any specific situations in the classroom.
  • Library: Our growing French library is an invaluable resource. Students can borrow two books or DVDs each week. The English classrooms also offer many possibilities. A guided reading collection is an important tool in our literacy program.
  • Field Trips:  We believe in experiential learning. All grades enjoy field trips throughout the year.
  • Assembly: Once a month, our children benefit from an extracurricular activity sponsored by the PTA. Programs have included interactive story- telling, the majesty of bubbles, science shows and so on.
